Chapter 20

R

eturning to his study, Jonny wasn’t surprised to see Axel behind his desk, rummaging through his papers. Others might have felt disrespected at a man going through someone’s belongings, or even distrust from a superior. Jonny felt neither. He held nothing but absolute trust and admiration for Axel. He was also their King. He could do whatever he damn well wanted.

However, Jonny was surprised to see Race was lounging in the chair opposite the desk with his feet up. The position he was in wasn’t the issue. The fact that he actually came down to work was a bit shocking.

“Axel.” Jonny nodded to his mentor as he made his way back to the bar. He didn’t spare Race a glance, but his annoyance could be heard in his voice. “Feet off the desk, Race.”

“Any leads?” Axel was never one to sit and bullshit.

Jonny came to stand beside the desk, reaching for one of the reports to review it again as he sipped on his new scotch. “No, nothing solid. Eight bodies so far. Nine were targeted that we know of. Three hired hitmen who all seem to be homeless and just in it for the cash found on them.”

Axel pointed up, indicating Cara as one of the targets.

“Yes, Cara was the ninth intended victim. I was able to subdue the assailant before he could complete his task.”

“Subdue?”

Race chuckled as Jonny squirmed from Axel’s intense gaze. “Subdue” wasn’t a usual term anyone in their world used.

Coughing to fill the space more than clearing his throat, Jonny clarified his statement. “Eliminate.”

“Ah. Any signs of this being anything other than an Outsider case?”

The way Axel asked had Jonny tilting his head to better examine his King. There was more to his visit than he was letting on. This wasn’t just a check-in from the messages Jonny had left him. Axel knew something and wasn’t sharing. Not yet, anyway.

“Other than the heart in a jar that we can’t find?” Race asked before Jonny could share what he knew. Axel nodded in affirmation. “Nah, not a damn thing.” Race was talking to the group but seemed more interested in cleaning his fingernails with a switchblade he’d pulled from his boot to really care to look at anyone.

“Hmmm.”

Jonny looked to Race, who raised his eyes as well at the King's response. That was new. Axel never made noncommittal sounds. He spoke or he didn’t. There was none of this hemming and hawing as he was doing now.

“Want to let us in on what you know, boss?” Axel was King and could do whatever the hell he wanted to do. Sharing usually helped when information was light like this, but Jonny wasn’t going to push him. The man knew more than most of them on any day of the week but only gave a few tips here and there for anything to really stick out. He believed a man could go it his own until he needed help; then it would be offered, but not before. One never knew when the advice might come in with the way Axel was.
